Meet Miss Jones

New Web Address

So I know this blog is all of, oh, a few weeks old–but I’m moving! I got frustrated with not being able to edit the CSS on WordPress.com (really, guys? Even Blogger lets you edit CSS!), so I got my own domain. It didn’t hurt that Dreamhost was having a sale. So update your links and head over to:

Easter Clicks

Posted by: meetmissjones on: April 21, 2010

Tonight (in between making a quesadilla and watching Parenthood) I finally edited some photos I took during Easter weekend of our friends and their daughter.

I’m s-l-o-w-l-y working on becoming a better photographer so that when we have kids, I’ll be able to document life in a fun-to-look-at way. A woman at our church blessed me with an old Canon D10, so I’ve been messing around with it in hopes of having a pretty good handle on things before I buy my own fancy-schmancy camera.

I’ve got a pretty good grasp of aperture/shutter speed, but I’m still working on the whole “lighting” thing. Some of my favorite photographers have such amazing light and tonality to their photos and I wish I could peek into their brain while they’re shooting. Hopefully, as it is with most hobbies, I’ll get better with practice and time. For now, here are some fun shots of my friends, the Stewards.

We went out to the boat ramp at the end of the street where Pap-Pap (Caleb’s grandpa) lives. It was right at sunset, so the lighting was a little crazy, but I like the warm glow everything ended up with.

And Our Electric Bill Was Still Cheap!

Keeping the lights on!Last week we had some friends over for dinner, and somehow we ended up discussing the fact that Caleb and I are such a good compliment to each other (aw, thanks guys!). I’m a tightwad, he’s more of a free spirit, and so we balance each other out (heh, usually).

I mentioned that if I married another version of me, we’d be such tightwads we’d never do anything fun.

My friend laughed and said, “Yeah, the two of you would be sitting here in the dark trying to save money.”

“True,” Caleb said, “but if I was married to a version of myself, we’d be sitting in the dark because the light bill hadn’t been paid!”

Thank the Lord for opposites.

Getting Ready to Roll

Posted by: meetmissjones on: April 8, 2010

So I’ve decided that in May, I’ll officially (for real, no kidding) start blogging. I’m going to stick with wordpress, because I like it. I don’t like the fact that since I don’t want to update my web host right now, I’m having to use the free wordpress.com–which offers zero CSS customization. Meaning, I’m stuck with a theme. Not a bad looking theme, by any means, but a theme nonetheless.

Hopefully I’ll take this blogging theme seriously and it will grow into something a little bigger that will make it worth paying $$ to upgrade my web host and design a fully customized theme, all built by moi. But not yet.

For now, theme it is, and next–fo’ real blogging!

Spring Sprang Sprung

Posted by: meetmissjones on: April 1, 2010

Well, the waiting game is done–in a manner of speaking. I’m way overdue on writing, but the past two months have been insanely crazy. Lots of freelance projects, more work, plenty of uncertainty. And in the end? I’m almost exactly where I was before. And I’m perfectly okay with that. This whole up-and-down journey has given me a renewed appreciation for my job and the people I work with. It’s also been a great catalyst for being open to change.

Caleb (Mr. Jones) and I have gone over a number of situations (especially when it was really looking like I might have to move if I wanted to keep my job) that we could find ourselves in, and God has given me peace about wherever we end up. Here, now, later–whenever. Whether it’s planting a church in a new city, or traveling, or staying exactly where we are–as long as it’s what we feel God is calling us to do, I will be content.

I truly cannot believe that it’s almost Easter. It has sprung (haha) out of nowhere, especially with the crazy chilly weather we’ve been having up until this past week. But it is warm and sunny and I have a full weekend ahead of me. Mr. Jones’ band is playing in the square downtown on Friday night and it’s very exciting. We have a big church Easter Egg hunt on Saturday, followed by a family BBQ, then the early beach sunrise service on Easter. I’m looking forward to spending time with family and taking pictures. Hopefully I’ll start putting some up here, I just need to figure out the most efficient way of doing so.

Oh, and Happy April Fool’s Day! Here’s a fun list of the top 10 April Fool’s Jokes from around the world.

Playing the Waiting Game

Posted by: meetmissjones on: February 3, 2010

I’m still playing the waiting game. It’s really strange now, because I already know that some people at our company are being moved. But I also know that some will stay here. So it’s pretty much 50/50 for us. We still probably won’t find anything out for another few weeks. Which, really, is good–because the longer that I don’t know, the longer I’m still here, getting a paycheck.

But man, I tell you what–al this waiting and wondering is starting to get to me. There are just so many possibilities, so many options. Which normally is not a bad thing, but it’s all so uncertain and of course I worry–about not having a job, about the idea of moving, about whether or not I can make it on my own doing freelance. Or teaching, or getting another design job.

All that I can do at this point is do the best job I can and keep praying that God will move things in the direction they’re supposed to go. I know He will take care of us, He always has. And that’s really all there is to it.

Holy Moly!

Posted by: meetmissjones on: January 29, 2010

This has been one of those weeks. On Wednseday, I thought, “Holy moly–how is it Wednesday already?!” And a moment later, I thought, “How is it not Saturday yet?!”

Like I said, it’s been one of those weeks.

The good thing, though, is that I had a very productive day at work yesterday. I knocked out a number of things that I thought would take much longer. There’s still much to do–granted, all of it is still cast in the light of our big “company meeting” on Monday, when we will officially become employees of a new owner. Lots of uncertainty, but I am optimistic.

More so, perhaps, due to the recent opening of a position above me, which I am excited about possibly filling. I think it will be a game of “wait and see” until we know how everything will be with the new owner, and what kind of changes that will bring.

Have I mentioned that sometimes I feel like I’m on The Office?

In other news for today, I’m very excited about Supper Club tonight. I’m sure my friend Jen (tonight’s host) will be posting a blog detailing it after the fact. The theme is “Vermont”, since Jen is actually moving to Vermont in a few months. She’s making Brie-Stuffed Roast Chicken. Yes, you read that right. And since Brie is one of my favorite food groups, I’m pretty much over the moon about it.

So I’ll let you know how it turns out (my guess is it will end with me, stuffed and happy, falling asleep at a late hour). For now, back to work!

P.S.
This morning I had one of those moments of pure inspiration, where I really felt the neurons in my brain connect. It’s exciting, because I was working on a project where I felt like I’d exhausted my sketching and had no good ideas to start fleshing out. But now, I do!

Motivated but Freezing

Posted by: meetmissjones on: January 5, 2010

Yesterday I wrote “10″ on a date for the first time, and it felt so strange. Is it really 2010? It’s odd being in a year with only one syllable. I’m so used to saying things like, “nintey-nine” or “oh-eight” or even “two-thousand”. But ten? Just ten? It will take me a while to get used to that.

So far my new year’s resolutions are off to a solid start. I worked out yesterday, went shopping and got a bunch of good “real food,” am being productive (well, most of the time) at work, and Mr. Jones and I are starting to schedule more regular “date nights.”

It’s been super-duper cold lately, so last night after I made dinner (blackened salmon with chickpea vinegarette and greens), we curled up on the couch and watched tv. I had a hard time motivating myself to get up and actually get ready for bed. I’m hoping this cold snap will pass soon–I really want to ride my new bike! Maybe this weekend…no, wait, the lows are 24-27 degrees. Ick.  Oh well, at least I have a good excuse to cuddle up with a warm blanket and a cute boy. :)

New Things in the New Year

Posted by: meetmissjones on: December 30, 2009

Okay, so as promised I am back. This time with thoughts about what this year will bring:

1. Uncertainty. As in, I am uncertain about whether or not I will have the same job in the next six months. Our company is being sold, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is very up in the air whether or not my department will remain here. And I’m not going anywhere.

2. Learning. As in, I may be learning to be a Middle School English teacher if my formerly mentioned job disappears. I have enough credits in English to get a Florida teaching certificate (I was an English minor in school). I’m actually a little excited about this…granted, I am praying that my job will stay the same and I won’t have to worry about a career change, but the prospect of teaching English (and getting summers off, wow) is a teensy bit appealing. We shall see. I’m glad I have a backup option.

3. Eating. As in, Mr. Jones and I will be eating much more natural and healthy food this year. I feel like 2009 was my big awakening about food and its true effects on our health. So in 2010, I will be using my new Nourishing Traditions cookbook, making as many things from scratch as I can, and eliminating high fructose corn syrup, white sugar, and white flour from most of our diet (all about the 80/20).

4. Crafting. As in, I will continue on the crafting spree that I started earlier this month. I have really been inspired to turn off the TV and MAKE THINGS! Plus my Christmas presents all got rave reviews, so the goal is to keep the tide flowing with crafted gifts for the rest of this year. Not to mention a few fun crafty things for myself. I might just start taking pictures and posting them here, wait and see.

There you have it, 2010 and the things that will be on my mind New Year’s Day. I’ll post my resolutions here on Friday so I have a place to keep myself accountable. See you in the NEW YEAR!

Have You Met Miss Jones?

Posted by: meetmissjones on: December 29, 2009

Hello! I am (shockingly enough) Miss Jones. Actually, to be completely accurate, I’m Mrs. Jones. But at church, all the kids call me “Miss Jones” and it matches the wonderful old song, so why not go with it? After all, even in the song it says, “Now I’ve met Miss Jones / And we’ll keep on meeting / ’till we die.” So I’m pretty sure that means they got married.

I decided it was high time that I start a blog. I don’t expect it to be much, and it may take some time before I start sharing it with people other than those who randomly stumble upon it. But it’s here. One of my big dreams is to have a wonderful blog once I have children, where I can share photos and experiences and fun things. Also not-so-fun things. It will probably be a while before there are any children, but I might as well start practicing now. Plus, I figure it will take some time for me to stop just writing gibberish and rambling on incoherently and start creating actual content. But I don’t have to that yet. Because right now, the blog is for me (and me alone).

It is three days after Christmas and two days before New Year’s. I’ve pretty much decided that no one should have to work during this time. The office is practically empty, I can’t concentrate, and I’ve only really done about an hour of work today. Which (I know) is dreadful, but how can they expect me to work when no one is here? And when the holidays are still in full lazy mode? Plus, I can’t really start my New Year’s resolutions until New Year’s Day. And that is still two days away. Luckily there is only one hour left until I get to go home.

Mr. Jones called earlier to ask where the yeast and the flour were. I’m not sure what he’s making but I’m pretty excited about it. I’m also very excited about the Chicken Parmesan that I’m making for dinner. Basil, tomatoes, cheese, garlic, organic chicken–it really doesn’t get much better. Tomorrow, I’ll talk about the coming year, and what’s in store (or at least, what might be).
